IFES has been working with the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) of Nigeria since 1999 to support the Commission’s
efforts to strengthen its capacity, increase the professionalism
of electoral administration and improve the credibility of the
electoral process in Nigeria. IFES involvement in Nigeria began
in 1998 with the observation of the 1998-1999 transitional elections,
and the provision of technical assistance to INEC in the area
of training. In addition, IFES has provided training to the State
Independent Electoral Commissions responsible for the conduct
of Local Government Elections in Nigeria. IFES has also been engaged
with Nigerian civil society organisations to support their involvement
in promoting a credible electoral process. In conduct of its activities,
IFES has been primarily funded by the U.S Agency for International
Development (USAID) with additional support from the United Nations
Electoral Assistance Division/UNDP, Australian Agency for International
Development (AusAID), the British High Commission in Abuja, the
British Department for International Development (DfID) and the
Canadian International Development Agency.
IFES currently enjoys support from USAID and DfID where two complimentary
programs are run from the office in 14 Panama Street, Maitama,
Abuja.
